Holcim invests in Electrified Thermal Solutions’ technology turning bricks into batteries

  • Investment by Holcim MAQER Ventures to scale up breakthrough renewable energy storage system

Holcim has invested in Electrified Thermal Solutions, a startup with innovative brick battery technology, to expand its range of clean energy solutions. The investment, made through Holcim MAQER Ventures, is intended to scale up Electrified Thermal Solutions’ Joule Hive Thermal Battery, a high-temperature energy storage system. The startup plans a commercial demonstration in 2025 before rolling it out globally.

Nollaig Forrest, Chief Sustainability Officer, Holcim: “The team at Electrified Thermal Solutions has developed an innovative technology that turns bricks into batteries. With our investment, we look forward to scaling up this clean energy solution across our operations to accelerate the shift to sustainable building at scale.”

Founded in 2020, Electrified Thermal Solutions has built on a decade of research and development at MIT to create a firebrick battery that can store electrical energy at ultra-high temperatures. Holcim’s investment follows its recent investments in Sublime Systems, a leading ultra low-carbon cement technology startup and in Paebbl, an advanced mineralization technology startup. Through Holcim MAQER Ventures, the company works with hundreds of startups worldwide to scale up the most innovative technologies.
