Affordable housing solutions at DIHAD humanitarian exhibition in Dubai

LafargeHolcim is part of the French delegation to the 13th annual Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development (DIHAD) exhibition held in Dubai from March 21 to 23. This major international event is an opportunity to explore how our affordable housing solutions can answer the construction needs of NGOs and corporate foundations.

Held from March 21 to 23, 2016 in Dubai, DIHAD is one the most important conferences dedicated to furthering humanitarian and development assistance, gathering major international players from both public and corporate worlds. LafargeHolcim was invited by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development to join a delegation of NGOs and companies for the event.

We can be a relevant contributor to humanitarian and development in many ways. The Group already has a long history of emergency support in post-disaster relief - we intervened in Indonesia following the tsunami in 2004 and after typhoons in the Philippines to name a few. Building on this experience, DIHAD is an opportunity to further enhance LafargeHolcim’s response to humanitarian and development construction needs.

At DIHAD, LafargeHolcim is showcasing its affordable housing solutions that can help international organizations, NGOs and corporate foundations provide access to housing at a more affordable cost and using greener construction materials. In particular, the Group is presenting Durabric, an earth & cement compressed stabilized brick that does not require firing.

Scaling up Durabric through a partnership with a leading humanitarian player

Our objective is to extend the Durabric offer initially developed in Malawi to other countries - including the provision of equipment to make the bricks, on-site technical support and training for brick makers - and to make it more widely available for humanitarian construction needs as a cost effective quality building material allowing to speed up construction.

That’s why, last December, LafargeHolcim decided to join forces with CDC Group plc, a subsidiary of the UK Government Department for International Development and one of the largest funders of humanitarian projects in the world to produce and promote Durabric.

Durabric, LafargeHolcim’s innovative solution for affordable and sustainable housing

Durabric is a low-carbon earth & cement solution for affordable homes. It was first developed in 2013 at the request of the Malawi Government. Made out of a compressed earth and cement mix that does not require firing, it offers a perfect solution for affordable and climate-friendly housing in cities and rural areas. It is currently used in 8 countries (Malawi, Tanzania, Madagascar, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria and Indonesia).
