Why ECOPlanet?

With 70% of the global population expected to live in cities by 2050, the world needs to build the equivalent of New York City every month. ECOPlanet cement aims to tackle this challenge sustainably by reducing emissions by at least 30%.

With Holcim’s industry-leading formulation expertise, ECOPlanet’s sustainability profile is driven by innovative low-emission raw materials. We use calcined clay and recycled construction demolition materials (CDM) in our ECOPlanet formulations to reduce buildings’ CO2 footprint by up to 50%.

By leveraging alternative fuels and harnessing advanced technologies like carbon capture, utilization and storage, we can further reduce ECOPlanet’s carbon footprint.

Building progress for people and the planet

ECOPlanet adds to Holcim’s leading range of innovative and sustainable building solutions, which are aligned with the world’s highest standards of sustainable building certifications – from BREEAM to LEED. It complements ECOPact low-carbon concrete, which is distributed across 30 markets worldwide.

Key ECOPlanet projects

ECOPlanet grounds the world’s first ‘energy island’

Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Island, the world’s first artificial energy island, is being built with 23 concrete caissons made from ECOPlanet. The project will give Belgium access to 3.5 gigawatts of energy generated by offshore wind.

Egypt’s flagship project uses 8,200 tons of ECOPlanet

ECOPlanet contributed to the construction of the Alamein Downtown Towers project in Egypt. Using 8,200 tons of ECOPlanet enabled a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions, in line with the “Egypt 2030” sustainability strategy.

ECOPlanet is enabling the construction of artificial reefs

Holcim donated ECOPlanet to Swiss startup, rrreefs, to create 500 concrete base elements. These elements will hold 820 3-D printed artificial reefs modules off the coast of Pujada Bay in the Philippines and help rehabilitate damaged marine ecosystems.
